Social Security beneficiary Spouse question
Client whose spouse just died age eighty receiving SS plus state teachers retirement. Surviving spouse receiving small SS check and civil service gov’t pension ( not railroad) applied for wife’s SS in that it is much larger. Was told he could not receive because he was receiving pension. Does not seem right and only response was one person on a call. In that I have received incorrect info many times in my career hoping that is the case here. Thanking you in advance for your opinion. Mark Conway, CFP

We are not SS experts here, but this sounds very much like the GPO. Basic article below. SSA should be able to provide a worksheet showing the actual dollars and how the GPO has reduced them.
