Social Security
During a client retirement planning, the subject of Social Security came up. Husband and wife are in their early eighties. Husband’s SS is $1,600 per month, Wife’s SS is $600 per month. At he husband’s death, how much would the surviving wife receive and at the wife’s death, how much would the surviving husband receive. Can’t get a clear answer from multiple sources including Social Security. Can someone please clear this up for us. thanks

When the first spouse passes, the surviving spouse will continue to receive the highest benefit of the two. That means the the benefit in this case for the surviving spouse will be 1600 per month. The lower benefit ends.
