Roth Conversions

Can an executor request a IRA to ROTH IRA conversion? Since you can’t convert from an inherited IRA I suspect there is no but didn’t know if there was a “work around”.

The only possibility is if the decedent took a pre death distribution but was not able to complete the rollover. There are a number of PLRs allowing the executor to complete the rollover and even extend the 60 day deadline due to the death of the IRA owner. However, if the TIRA or Roth IRA receiving the contribution had not been created at the time of death, the executor has no authority to appoint a beneficiary of the new account, meaning that the stretch would be limited to those inheriting through the estate as compared to the options for a designated beneficiary.  But you are correct that the executor cannot initiate the conversion if no distribution had been taken prior to death.
