Pre-RBD spouse dies. Survivor is over 72.

Just checking myself here.

IRA owner is 68 and dies in 2021. Surviving spouse is 77. SS performs spousal rollover.

Even though the IRA is now treated as being owned by the 77-year old SS, there’s no RMD due for 2021, correct?

My logic is that RMDs are based on 12/31 prior-year balance, and the SS didn’t have a 12/31/20 balance for this account (because it wasn’t his).

Preeeeeety sure I’m right, but would be grateful for some consensus. Please and thank you.

Correct, no 2021 RMD required since IRA owner passed prior to RBD. Surviving spouse could have kept the IRA as inherited and there would have been no RMDs until deceased spouse would have reached 72, and then do the spousal rollover in that year. As it stands, SS will have to start RMDs in 2022.
