Distributions During 10 year period

Is anyone aware of any scenario under which a beneficiary under the 10 year rule has RMDs prior to the end of the 10 year period? Or does the beneficiary just have to make sure the IRA is exhausted by the end of the 10th year?

The IRS has reversed course on this question twice now. Under the new proposed rules, if the owner passes on or after RBD, there will be annual life expectancy RMDs each year and the inherited IRA must be drained by the end of the 10th year as well. This proposal is not likely to become final until late this year, and when it does the IRS will have to determine if this requirement becomes effective in 2022 or later.
