spousal IRA rollover required minimum distribution

Dear Alan et al,

Our client passed away in Nov 2021 after his year-of-death RMD was taken. We just consolidated his IRA into his wife’s IRA (less than 10 years younger) earlier this year. Am I correct that the 2022 RMD representing his 12-31-2021 balance before the spousal rollover will be based on his wife’s life expectancy factor?

Thanks,

Chris

Yes, the wife is treated as owning the inherited IRA from client for the entire year of 2022. Therefore, her 2022 RMD will be from the new Uniform Table for her attained age in 2022, and she will use the combined 12/31/2021 balance of her own IRA and the inherited IRA from client.
