I Bond Limit

Saw article in WSJ regarding annual $10,000 limit on I Bonds. Article suggests paying excess quarterly estimates by $5000. and requesting refund in I Bond payment. Can my wife and I pay $10,000 and request I Bond for each of us @ $5000 ?

  • Your I bond purchases using your tax refund are limited to $5,000 per tax refund, not per person, so to be able to purchase $10,000 in I bonds with tax refunds you and your spouse would need to file separately, which probably doesn’t make sense.
  • Yes, you are permitted to make estimated tax payments to increase your tax refund.
