IRA RMD

Can a IRA trustee/custodian send you a check for an annual RMD from your Inherited IRA without your authorization for the distribution. There is a difference of opinion between Trustee and inherited IRA recipient as to RMD requirement. Thank you.

This can be done for an inherited qualified plan, but not for an inherited IRA. Due to IRA RMD aggregation rules, the IRA Custodian has no idea if the total RMD has been taken from a different inherited IRA. Further, due to the extreme complexity involved with the IRS Secure Act proposed Regs, most likely an IRA custodian does not even have the all the facts needed to calculate inherited IRA RMDs. The IRS itself has been confused over some of the relevant details, and it has taken 3 nearly 3 years since the Secure Act was passed, and we still do not have final IRS Regs.
