Inherited IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution

IRA owner Bob, age 89, died on 4-6-2023. He had not taken his RMD for 2023. The IRA was distributed to his two children into inherited IRAs. The children understand they must take the 2023 RMD. One child, age 57 would like to make a QCD. Since the child is under 70 1/2 are they eligible to do so this year since it is Bob’s RMD? Can they do it in future years?

Thank you in advance.

  • They will have to wait until age 70.5. While the year of death RMD is the amount the owner would have had to distribute, it’s still made to the beneficiary from the beneficiary’s inherited IRA. However, there is flexibility for how much of the owner’s RMD each child takes since they can satisfy the year of death RMD in any combination between the two.
  • Since Bob passed post RBD, the children will have to take annual beneficiary RMDs in years 1-9 of the 10 year rule using their respective single life table ages starting in 2024 and then drain the inherited IRA by the end of 2033. The 2024 divisor will be reduced by 1.0 for each year after 2024.

Thank you for the prompt response. To make sure that I am clear:1. They cannot make a QCD.2. They must start taking RMDs in each of the next 10 years based on their life expectancy minus 1.0 each year. They cannot wait until year 10 to take a distribution.

Yes, you’ve got it.
