QCD in year of death
Hello,
A client recently died with a sizable IRA. She normally did a QCD to meet her RMD. When she died, she had not finished making the distributions from her IRA so she has an outstanding RMD of $44k. The beneficiary is a non-spouse that is not 70 ½. Is the beneficiary able to satisfy the remainder of the decedent’s RMD in the year of death and send to charity to claim as a QCD even though they are not 70 ½? I don’t think so, but wanted to check.
Thank you.

You are correct. A beneficiary must be 70.5 in order to do a QCD. That said, if the beneficiary had reached 70.5 they could use QCDs to complete the year of death RMD of the decedent or for their future beneficiary RMDs.
