IRA designatin per stirpes

If you name a beneficiary with “per stirpes” and that beneficiary passes, does that share go to all of his/her descendants? Specifically looking at an instance when all of his children are not named in his will.  Does the will play any role in determining who his descendants are?

No.

I think you meant that the primary beneficiary passed prior to the owner. If so, the per stirpes designation makes the lineal descendants of the deceased beneficiary designated IRA beneficiaries. The will does not affect them unless there are no lineal descendants left, so the child not named in the will can inherit from the IRA.

Thank you Alan
