non-spouse inherited IRA
I inherited my father’s IRA on his date of death (10/20/2019). He was already getting RMD’s. I mistakenly assumed that the Secure Act of 2019 would be in play and I wouldn’t have to take anything until the Act was permanently in the Code. Of course I now know that I should have taken an RMD according to my life expectancy but I thought I had 10 years to take it all out (2019 balance $50,000).
Should I know take several RMD’s for missed years AND the 2024 RMD all in one distribution? Or should I make separate distributions for 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023 and then one additional for 2024?
Then I can put each year amount on the correct Form 5329. Do I have to file (4) separate Form 1040x? And do I include the penalty on the Form 5329’s and then request abatement? Or can I just send in (4) 5329’s with correct year version?
Help would be much appreciated.
Jim
