QCD
Real quick basic question- can I donate shares from my IRA to my alma mater College (Colgate University) as a QCD? Thanks in advance

You could, but I don’t know why you would want to unless the shares are not liquid and you wanted to pass this issue to the University. You would also have to supply the University account number to the IRA custodian to enable direct transfer.
Most charities would rather receive cash and if you donated cash you would know the exact amount. Share values can change between the time you determine the number of shares and the time when the custodian processes the transfer, so your QCD could vary in amount. Finally, because QCDs avoid all taxes, using appreciated shares from an IRA does not have the same benefit as donating those shares from a taxable brokerage to avoid paying LTCG taxes on those shares if you sold them.
